Neighborhood Museum - National Treasure The Museum's 16 galleries provide an intimate setting to enjoy a unique and enriching collection of American fine and decorative arts made or used in Delaware and the Mid-Atlantic region. Also housed within the Museum is the Changing Exhibitions Gallery featuring three to four original exhibitions annually as well as the Programs Gallery for lectures, entertainments, lively receptions, Saturday Biggs Kids programs, and facilities usage. Special features of the permanent collections include the only comprehensive representational American paintings collection on the peninsula with highlights by the Peale family, Gilbert Stuart, Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, and Childe Hassam, sculptures by the likes of Hiram Powers, as well as images by local talents like Brandywine School illustrator Frank E. Schoonover. In addition are examples of furniture by noted Early-American cabinetmakers like the Janviers of Odessa and William Savery of Philadelphia. Finally the Museum houses one of the best collections of the works of local silversmiths in the country and much, much more. Tues-Sat 9am-4:30pm, Sun 1:30-4:30 pm. Open State Holidays.

Exhibiting American art in a 19th-century gristmill, the Brandywine River Museum is internationally know for its unparalleled collection of works by three generations of Wyeths and its outstanding collection of American illustration, still life and landscape painting. Outdoors, wildflower gardens surround the museum in glorious color from spring through autumn.

Weekdays 9-2 p.m. Two early 18th-century house museums, the John Chads House and the Barnes-Brinton House, open for tours by costumed guide weekends May through September, 1-5 p.m., and at other times by appointment. Admission $5 to tour both houses.

The DCCA houses seven galleries, one high-tech auditorium, a classroom, museum store and twenty-six artists' studios in its 33,000 square foot facility. The History Center campus dominates the 500 block of Market Street, Wilmington, in the heart of the downtown cultural district. It is comprised of the Delaware History Museum, Grandma's Attic Kids Museum, Old Town Hall, Willingtown Square historic park, and the Historical Society of Delaware Research Library. Tour groups are welcome. Delaware History Museum features a fun, colorful, and very hands-on permanent exhibition, Distinctively Delaware. Changing exhibits of art, costumes, dolls and toys, photographs and more explore social history through the centuries. Grandma's Attic Kids Museum is a learn-and-play discovery center with vintage dress up, old-fashioned marketplace, puppet theater, low-tech office, 1940s kitchen, historic games and toys. Old Town Hall, a Georgian-style building constructed in 1798, was the site of abolitionists' meetings and public functions. Willingtown Square, an historic park, is bordered by six 18th-and 19th-century homes currently used as office and meeting space. The Research Library specializes in Delaware genealogy and photographs. It is open free to the public 1-9 p.m. Mon., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tue.-Fri.
